[Big AOE fan here] AOE Online is far too expensive

I'm pretty saddened. I've been waiting so long for a remake of AOE to surface and bring back the glory days of zone.msn and AOE.

I spent a lot of my childhood skipping school to play AOE.

I'm completely disappointed with AOE online. In modern times, developers should now understand how multiplayer games design should be lateral development and not pay2win with players having significant advantages over others.

AOE is marketed as free 2 play. But in order to seriously play and be on equal footing as other players you need to pay extortionate costs.

I'm so disappointed about this. I've been looking forward to playing AOE for ages and I can't believe this is what has been developed.

It is a tragedy to the brand. Sorry for being so negative, but this is how I feel and I don't want to :(

$20 buys you a premium civilization and that allows you to use any gear, any advisors, play ranked PvP, earn faction points, build max workshops and craft any gear in the game. $20 gives you everything you need, so if that is to expensive for you then it is time to find a different game.

Or get a job :) and if one can't get a job I am clueless how can they afford to play games on computer period.

So, your issue is, if this was a stand alone game, it would have been $50, which you would have gladly paid to be on 'equal footing'.

However you have an issue, paying $20, for 1 premium civ, to be on 'equal footing' because the game is "Free to play"?

For the record, you can find sever posts and videos of free players beating premium players in pvp.

|||

Instead of paying 50€ for a box, you pay 20€ a premium civ. A pity 20 > 50 in your world.xD

Sarcasms apart: it's not AOE, it's AOEO. The "O" stands for Online: there's a MMO component in the game now, it is not a pure RTS. A mistake made par all the pure RTS fans here. You develop a city now (the same way you would develop a character in an MMO). You equip your units, you farm game currencies to get better gear, you play an MMO! -or something pretty close to it-

I also spent a lot of my young age playing AoE1. AOEO is the closest thing to AOE1 you can dream of. And no it isnt expensive! Redo the maths by yourself! How could 50€ (box) + 35€ one year later for the expansion be less expensive than 20€ (premium) + 3 or 4 x 10€ for booster packs?

Turn it the way you want, the price complaints for this game are laughable at best. Do youself a favor: invest exactly the same amount of money in AOEO than what you would have invested with a new AOE4, do the missions/quest to get to Level 40, you will find there the true soul of the game you used to love! That's exactly what happened to me, and I wasnt even "waiting for" the game's release at first :D

Check out the link in my sig to compare free with premium. While the other AoE games were pay one price for absolutely everything, all the civs in those games worked off of one tech tree and did not have nearly the amount of customization that is in this game. There were always expansions that you had to buy on top of the game if you wanted to do multiplayer also so the cost is pretty comparable anyway.

You might complain that you have to buy every civ in this game, but in reality you can play all the civs (Except for pro I do believe) as a free player and only pay for the ones you like best, if you want to pay at all. I know when I play AoE2 I almost always play one civ, but still paid full price for all the civs+expansion. I tried all of them for a little while, but then found one I liked and stuck with that. You can do the same here.

This game is not really pay to win, in the other link in my sig that channel has a video of a free player vs paid player, both lvl 40 with good gear. The free player won. While those players are amazing anyway, even if they were all free and I got matched up with them as a paid player they would wipe the floor with me. Strategy beats gear lots of times as long as your are comparable lvls. A lvl 20 will pretty much always have trouble beating a lvl 40, paid or not. Paid does give a definite advantage, but does not guarantee victory.

Agreed with the guy who has made this post .. Think about it guys (Its not about the $20) .. Not at all

Why is the season pass $100 ?.. This is too expensive to buy... I love the game and want to get the season pass but its highly expensive

I think the season pass should be around $60 and each Civalization should be around $10 each.. Since more civilizations are coming in future .. They should be $10 for each .. I don't wanna pay $20 per each civilization each time !!

This would make things eaiser for alot of people cuz not everybody can afford games ..

hope this helps

urggg... get a job, work 2 hours, pay 20$, enjoy.

I understand that you rather stay at home playing videogame than working to afford yourself a 20$ game but... it is not how it is supposed to work.

|||

That $100 bundle was a train wreck for this game. You do NOT need the $100 bundle to compete with other players! The $20 civilization gives you everything you need.

|||

Wtf is wrong with you people??? He said it consider it to expensive, that in no way means he cant afford it, so that "get a job" remarks was totally uncalled for and really immature! If you don't make cost-value estimations when purchasing things I sincerely doubt that you are old enough to have jobs.

I personally also think this game might get to expensive soon, I wouldnt be surprised if soon BIS gear is only attainable by booster packs.

|||

At this point I hope they put in a store that sells epic items and epic recipes for Microsoft Live Points! 100 points per epic! That will really give people something to complain about ;)

If they had just released a normal Age of Empires title at $50 or $60 you get at least 5 full civilizations, ranked "PvP" and a campaign. $20 gets you -one- Civilization, the same stupid quests over and over (which is worse than a full campaign) and ranked "PvP". If I were to buy all four Civs that are announced that would be $80.. now tell me.. how is that NOT expensive? (This is without buying boosters like Crete...)

Now, they have the season pass for $100, but think about this. If I play a pay to play MMO like World of Warcraft or Rift and pay month-to-month, no discounted offers, it's still cheaper than Age of Empires Online..

|||

How much does content download typically cost for other games, $5, 10, 15 usually right? Songs for Rock Band are what? $1-2 EACH? And new multiplayer maps for Halo, CoD, GoW, you name it typcially go for $10. $10 for a new content download is not too bad or outrageous compared to other games on the market.

As for the civs themselves, only buy what you like. Play the others free. How many of you that complain use more than four civs from the old AoE games? Four civs would be $80, very comparable to AoE3+expansions at launch of each.

Well said bro ..

Its just gives you an idea about how people misunderstand your comment sometimes.

Its not about "job or working", Its about the price of the game !! (Its some way expensive) .. Like I said it earlier .. My point is clear (Season pass is too expensive to get) .. Why is that? Any ideas? .. If someone wants to get the full game with season pass!! (then its way beyond the expected price)

World of Warcraft with TBC $30 + WoTLK $40 + Cata $40 + $15 x 6 months = $200

WoW is twice as much for 6 months and you would have to subscribe for several years before it evened out.
