Why there is no session saving?

I think this should be done coz sometime ppl get log out during quest.|||While it would be nice, since the game is an MMO it wouldn't really work.
|||

then again mmo's saveconstantly, if you lose connection in middle of quest game will remeber progress. No such luck in AoE.

And I do belive there is need for some kind of safe guard, it is extremly frustrating to lose connection to live just as you are about to finish of you enemy in a elite quest..

|||

How are you guys loosing connections, I have never ever lost a connection to the game unless I have left the game........You guys sound like you have router or bad connection.

Sorry just what I think, Why does this not happen to all of us? Loosing connection is the fault of your connection, and even if you do loose connection, is the game really that hard? Hell no it is easy to just do over.

|||It's not just about losing connection. Sometimes, something comes up when halfway through a quest. There is an inactivity timeout that makes even pausing the game an impossibility. Saving state periodically during a quest would be a quick fix. MMO's save state all the time so I'm not sure what that other poster is smoking. Someone else suggested that implementing a proper replay saves would be a more robust fix, which I agree. I'm sure we'll see it someday, because it really isn't that hard.
|||In my opinion this should be done, I think saving session would be very very useful.|||

+1 - I have a 6 week old baby, and he has woken up while I was half way through the quest, and I had to take care of him, then lost it when I came back. bleh. Especially considering so much of the game is solo, there's no reason for saving your current solo quest progress. Another option is simply logging out of chat, saying you've been disconnected in your chat windows, so you're basically offline and not wasting server resources, then you can just sign back in later. (if the game version changed between then, it could then make you exit).

|||

If you play solo, just hit "ESC", it will pause your game.

Doesnt work in multiplayer/coop though.

|||Yes but with the esc to pause the game, if you then leave it like that for a reasonable amount of time it time out and you are booted from the game.|||The big technical issue that makes it stick out from an ordinary mmorpg where you're all in the same world or in a premade instance, and you don't have to save a lot of information. In AoEO the maps are procedurally generated (although i suppose the seed number could be used, and then just regenerate the map based on that), and then you have hundreds of units (gaia, players) and objects (trees, ore deposits, berry bushes) to store. Now, this may not sound like much at first, but take into consideration that it would have to store a list of what gear you used at this point, your tech tree, the HP of each unit etc. As a consequence the servers would be hammered tenfold what they are now, and that's disregarding the space it would take up on the database servers and the fact gear/tech tree changes can't be solved in a nice way, resulting in the mess that i just described.
